before you build your website
If you’re about to build a website or have started building, thinking about revamping or creating a website, before we even look at features, elements, colours, we’ve got to get a little deep. Get a good idea of all the ins/outs, and what exactly it is you want the site to do for you.
We have websites for so many reasons. Some sell, some inform, others entertain, some are gathering places, there something for everyone, and one size does not fit all. Each biz has its own objectives, that bring their own set of challenges and barriers.
Some things to think about –
✅ Your business. Your product. Your vision/mission, core values. The challenges. The good stuff. The problems your biz solves.
✅ Who is this website for? Get specific – find your niche audience.
✅ What’s working really well (and what’s not) in your market. Get creative with this – think about the things that don’t directly compete with your product/service, but might draw attention away from it. Think about the things that might complement your business as well.
✅ What is the number one thing you want people to do once they are on your website?
✅ What is the number two thing you want people to do, if they don’t do number one? Hey, go number three thing if you can!
All of this info will help you have a really good picture of all the things that you (or your designer) will need to create, implement, research, to achieve the best user experience for your site. It’s like a little treasure hunt, where you have to solve little puzzles to get to the next stage!
All of this goes a long way, and it will guide the visual outcome of the website. It will inspire your imagery and content. AND It will also keep you on track when you build your website, or make it easy for you to regroup/start again if your circumstances change.
